I think it only hampers the use of diesels in the US. I'm gonna do a little research here, but a compression ignition engine is a diesel engine whether you run it on gas, D2 or VO...regardless of how it is modified to make best use of the fuel. Diesel himself modified engines to run on various locally available fuels. I can easily imagine an engine with higher compression that would completely burn VO taking full advantage of its higher BTU/gallon and getting better mileage than the engines we have that are optimized to run D2. BUT, it seems silly to try to perfect a diesel engine to run on gasoline...it's too volatile for a compression ignition engine...I guess you might get some enviro benefits, but what I like about a "normal" diesel is that you CAN put alot of different things in the tank and make it run. Try running VO in an HCCI - now way will it work.
