Hi Mountain Man!
The engine would vibrate a lot - especially at idle. It finally got so bad
(the MM's were bad) that the exhaust began to hit the frame! It made all
kinds of racket! I replaced the drivers side MM one day and the rocking got
a little better. I changed the passenger side a day or 2 later and the
change was *Dramatic*!! Evidently the MM's had been bad the whole time
we've owned the car (~3 years) - it would rock like our 78 240D! With both
new MMs it was 99% as quiet as a gas engine! We have to turn the radio off
so we can hear the engine crank so we know when to release the key! Now I
know what a new '91 300D sounded like --
I don't think it has ever had any surging - except when the CC is engaged
and I'm going downhill.
I assume you've looked for vacuum leaks? Shortly after I bought our 300D
(in 2007 w/99K mi) I replaced all of the hoses. My car is like a new
one....
Also, the EGR may need to be cleaned or replaced. Same for the intake
manifold - it can get filled up with all kinds of crud. Yes, it's black and
nasty to remove...

Tell me more about this rock at idle?
I have noticed that happening a bit at idle, I think.
The engine surges, almost like there is a damper in the system and
fuel is surging for about 20 seconds after I come to full stop.
