Yeah, but how to attach the other piece and spring so that the door
closes properly and stays closed?

I just did that repair on my glovebox door. It "broke" at one point
recently, with the spring jumping the spring-stop. I bent the ends of the
spring to gouge into the spring stop and not slip over it. Works fine now,
but I do need to adjust the hinges where they mount to the dashboard
because the glovebox light stays on with the door closed.
