I think that a factory rebuild or replacement engine will have a new
serial number, which you can compare to the original vehicle data card.
The EPC data card may or may not have been updated.  The dealer may or
may not have records, depending on if a dealer installed the engine.
Bottom line is that the seller should have paperwork to show the
installation, and if he doesn't then assume original engine and price
accordingly.  If seller is ignorant then you can try to pursue via
dealer and EPC and maybe the original vehicle data card, if available.

I've also heard that a replacement engine (not a rebuild) will have a
blank spot with no number.
