I have read that it takes more energy to raise the temperature than it does to 
maintain it. We are looking at
adding electric heat to the cottage and mother gripes about the cost of 
electricity. I have talked to her about the
issue and told her that she will have to leave them alone but I wonder if she 
will be able to restrain herself.

I bought a programmable thermostat last fall ('08).  I set it up to
raise and lower the temperature setting according to our usual
work/school patterns.  My gas usage increased.  I went back to the
manual and we only change it if we're going to be away for more
than a day.
