The owners manual gives a good description of how it operates.

Subject: [MBZ] W124 sunroof manual retraction

W124 folk,

The pop-up/slide sunroof on my '86 300E only pops up, doesn't slide.
I have no illusions that I can fix it, but I'd like to slide it back
just once to clean out the drains (left rear footwell is getting wet
every time it rains), with some confidence that I will be able to
close it again. What's the best way? Emergency crank in the trunk,
or does that only work to move it one way and not the other? How does
the crank work anyway (I don't think I have a 124 owner's manual
anywhere)?

Thanks,
Alex
