Not to much different than the 'New' 1965 Shelbys that are being built. He owns the registered serial numbers so he can build them, as I understand it.

There was a guy north of the city who was doing just that, with old
Bugattis. He had an amazing storehouse of old original parts, STILL in
factory wrapping paper and boxes! They would build up cars and add lots of
original bits to bit, and fab what they couldn't source. They were correct
right down to the number of rivets on the body panels. They were probably
as original as a lot of the so called "restored" cars, which back in the
late 80s often meant nothing more than an original engine block with a
serial number, and a whole new car built around it.

How much would it cost to fab up something that looked pretty similar,
using quality modern parts? I'm not talking about fiberglass kit cars, but
to do a full-up build, beat panels, maybe use modern running gear, etc.
Kinda like the high-end hot rod builders, like Foose. I'm sure Leno's
garage could do that, or me in my garage with enough time and tools (yea,
more tools!!!).

As truly incredible the 600 was IMO the pre-war grosser Benzes are even
more awesome. The various 540's are selling for astronomical prices these
days - with good reason due to the cost to restore& maintain them. Here's
a 540 Sport Roadster for example:

(if link is stripped, go to ultimatecarpage.com and search for 540
Mercedes. I wish it didn't take Ralph Laren pockets to own them!)

BTW, the factory keeps a warehouse with the wood used in the interiors of
the 600s - in case one ever needs a replacement piece/s it will be matched
perfectly. I wonder if they stockpile other parts?

Subject: Re: [MBZ] 600 parts costs

According to a recently retired (after 38 years) tech at my dealer, the
heater panel (a row of buttons) cost is ten grand.

He tended for years to a 50K mile black 600 SWB that I would see in the
service department from time to time. I had the opportunity to look at
the
bottom side once when it was in drydock on the lift. Made my Visa card
tremble.
He also did what had to be done on a few 108 Cabs which also can deplete
your holdings.

I am puzzled by the resentment and disdain shown here by a few toward
cars
of this sort. I am glad that those who have the resources to maintain and
enjoy them do so because when I see a well kept example of an important
MB,
it's my pleasure.
