If the gasket is still around, check it for leaks or signs of failure -- if you have bad stretch bolts, likely they were damaged during installation or improperly torqued and the result was a leaking head gasket.

Easy enough for exhaust to get into the coolant (and oil for that matter) if the bolts weren't tight -- the overpressurization will cause coolant loss, and it's also possible for coolant to get into the cylinders that way. Would have run like crud though if the compression was leaking.
