What would be the criterion for judging a 'good' used unit . Its
certainlly seems worhwhile to get a used one,the new ones are quite pricy.

If you don't feel you know the difference, buy one from somebody that
knows the difference (like Potomac German Auto or Silver Star) that
warrants what they sell and know what they are doing.
