Even if you don't have hard water, check and clean (or replace) the filter.  We 
had a Maytag in our last house that was doing a really lousy job cleaning 
dishes after 10 years of use, and so I tore into it.

The filter was practically clogged - it was amazing the thing even worked.  
Went to the local appliance parts place, bought a filter and put it in.  
Cleaned all the cruft out of the thing while I was in there as well.

Darned thing ran like new after that.  First time I ever had a dishwasher for 
that long, so shame on me for not checking into maintenance on it.
