Yes, and MB even issued a TSB to that affect. I'm probably risking
disaster in continuing in my violation of the prime directive, but I
can't stand to have that light coming on and off!

It is written in the book of Saint Marshall, DO NOT TOP OFF THE OIL.

My oil level sensor has been pretty consistent, when the level reaches
the mid-way point on the stick it will start activating (stay on for a
minute or two), and when it finally comes on and stays on the level is
all the way down to the bottom mark or 'add' mark. It takes a month or
so (1500 miles or more) to drop to the 'add' mark and so I now just add
a quart when it starts to blink.

I used to only change my M1 oil on stone cold engines, but now I'm
beginning to wonder if that is really necessary on OM60x engines.

Oil level lights are notoriously inaccurate. Circuit has sensor, some
type of timer relay etc.

M1 oil is like lemon juice when hot. About 90% will be in the pan after
5 minutes, the last teacup full will be tenacious and take many hours to
drain to the pan. That is why I usually change my oil stone cold on all
my cars.

YMMV

Subject: [MBZ] Another Oil Thread

Dieselvolk,

Just got back on Saturday from a business trip to New England and back,
drove my '87 wagon and put on about 1700 miles. It's now time for an oil
change, but I cannot find Mobil 1 15W-40 or 0w-40 at the usual places.
Where are folks getting their M1 these days?

Also, during the homebound leg, the low oil light came on for a few
minutes, so I checked the level during the next rest stop, and after
only sitting for about 10 minutes, the oil registered at the midway
point on the dipstick (normal point for the low oil level light to start
activating on my car). I was surprised that it (Mobil 1 15w-40) had
drained back into the oil sump so quickly!

Does anyone else find that their M1 drains back quickly in OM60x engines
vs.OM61x? Marshall used to say that one must wait 6 to 8 hours to get an
accurate oil reading using M1 in an OM61x engine, and I guess I assumed
that the same applied to an OM60x engine.

Very respectfully,
/s/
