Hi Randy,
I restarted today - approx. 5-6 days since I finished spraying the clear - but could have started sooner. First, I washed the car with Dawn dish detergent to remove all traces of wax which I think may have been in some of the buffing products I used - based on the way the water beaded up.

BTW - Dish detergent should *never* be used on a car unless prepping to paint - it strips the wax as well as nutrients from the paint and will damage it.

I'm in the process of sanding the body to get it perfectly smooth - then I'll shoot the color to cover (doesn't need many coats - just cover the old finish), followed by clear. I plan to use 6-8 coats of clear but as I spray I may reduce that number depending on the results.

Because I'll be using a different mix of clear to reducer to get a better flow-out, I will have to be extremely careful to spray very thin coats (especially on the vertical surfaces) to prevent sagging or runs. It's going to take some patience. I often get impatient and want to see the finished paint job ASAP but I'm going to have to fight that desire.

BTW, I'm reshooting the OEM color so getting cover should be pretty easy - and I won't take all the previous paint job off - I think I've already taken most of the clear off trying to repair the orange peel.

How soon can you safely sand and repaint?

Hi Gang --
I repainted my MB last week (the clear was lifting in places and there
was a spot of bubbling paint on one door) - I ended up with more orange peel
than I would have liked - spent a week color sanding & buffing. Went back
to the paint store and asked them about the problem - they said to mix more
of the harder with the clear than the instructions called for - that would
allow it to flow out better and reduce orange peel - the downside is
vertical surfaces must be done carefully to prevent sags and drips.

I was always told that I should mix the different paint components
precisely as instructed. To do otherwise could be dangerous or give odd
results. But with the clear - instead of mixing 2:1 (clear : hardener) I
found 2:1.5 gave much better results.

I tried it on a spare pane I have and to my amazement (I'm easily
entertained) the paint *did* flow out immediately and had an almost finished
look as soon as I stopped painting! It would still need some finishing to
be totally *done* but the work could be done in a few hours instead of
days. Assuming I avoid any runs/sags. ;-^

So later this week I'll be painting again. Oh well, practice makes
perfect, I hope.
