My son bought a 1991 740 with a blown head gasket. I replaced it for
$250.00 (free labor from me). This is by far the easiest car I have
ever worked on, and he really enjoys driving it. I don't know about the
850,s but they have their list and are a helpful group. You may want to
sign up and ask there.

My bias is for the 240s of the late 80s and early 90s. They're good,
solid cars, parts are plentiful and cheap, and they're relatively easy
to work on.
