'Thoroughly enjoyed the absolutely rust-free '64 Karmann Ghia I had from '65-'70. 'Still needing a good kicking for selling it in Oct '70 for $750 with 45 kmi on it.

Both Type III chassis' were imported by VW, but were fairly rare relative to the Beetle. I had a 71 Fastback that had a dual carb setup on it (converted from the early FI) and it would definitely stand up on it's hind legs, so to speak. I owned every body style but a Squareback and a Karmann Ghia. Didn't care much about the Squareback but always wanted a Ghia. I could never find a decent one - they were always rust buckets. My favorite was probably my 61 barn door van. Simple, but very reliable and economical. Had the original 39 HP engine in it and with a set of 15" snow tires from my Mom's 72 Impala it would go offroading with ease. I bought it for next to nothing, scrounged nearly everything I got to finish the interior (paneling and shag carpet, of course) and drove it for several years. I did a simple dark green paint job on it and a girl friend artist airbrushed "der Party Vagon" in Old English type on the sides.
I wish I had pictures of it. Probably do, somewhere....
Dan no longer driving a party vagon Man

The Notchback was never officially imported to the USA, I don't think.
Although that meant less in the days before the gray-market explosion and
subsequent crackdown in the mid-'80s.

Of course almost all air-cooled VWs (excluding the '80s and '90s Mexican
taxis) are well over 25 years old now, so they can be imported without worry
about DOT and EPA laws (although state and local lawys may still prevent
it).
