Having read through the laundry list of W210 built in defects, I wonder if a mid-line Buick of that era would have as many expensive problems.
Looks to me like the whole series is iffy and and the only E-Class after the 124 that doesn't diisintegrate around your ears and melt your Visa card is a post 2004 W211. Gas.
