So I finally swapped out the speedometer in my 1983 300TD. You all may
recall that 1) it made a nasty grinding noise at higher speeds, and 2) mph
was consistently 10 - 15 percent too high. I swapped in a used speedo with
a higher (newer) part number. The bad news is that the grinding noise is
still there but the good news is that the mph gauge is now accurate. Also,
the new speedo stops counting at 2.9 miles on the trip counter and the main
mileage reading doesn't move at all.

So here is the question: How do I lube the speedometer cable, and with what
lubricant? I assume this can be done by disconnecting the cable from
beneath the dash after removing the driver's side kick panel, and then
spraying or applying some substance into the end of the cable that will
cause the noise to abate.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew
