Could be icing up the evap or could have ice blocking the line if it was not evacuated well last time.

On my '95 E300, the AC starts out strong, but after about 20 minutes it
is noticeably weaker and eventually it fades completely away (goes from
very cold to cold to sort-of-cold to ambient).  AC compressor clutch is
staying engaged.

Could this be a leaking monovalve insert?  Next time I can play, I'll
see if the refrigerant lines are still cold.
