Max: Yeah, that's why my indy avoided heat altogether. Cut the bar with a cutoff wheel (Very hard, took forever), then installed his version of the collar with SET SCREWS that fit into flats ground in the torsion bar and JB Weld.
It sounds like bubble gum and baling wire, but was very neatly executed. I've given it a severe beating since with very hard driving on frost=heaved Maine backroads, including trail-braking and sliding through corners that turned out to be a bit (OK, much!) sharper than I thought, and no problems. In fact, if I'd remembered at the time I'd had the repair done, I'd not have been driving so hard, but the repair has held up just fine. I don't know whether a weld that affected the temper would be as durable.
