Max: Yeah, that's why my indy avoided heat altogether. Cut the bar with a
cutoff wheel (Very hard, took forever), then installed his version of the
collar with SET SCREWS that fit into flats ground in the torsion bar and JB
Weld.

It sounds like bubble gum and baling wire, but was very neatly executed. I've
given it a severe beating since with very hard driving on frost=heaved Maine
backroads, including trail-braking and sliding through corners that turned out
to be a bit (OK, much!) sharper than I thought, and no problems. In fact, if
I'd remembered at the time I'd had the repair done, I'd not have been driving
so hard, but the repair has held up just fine.
I don't know whether a weld that affected the temper would be as durable.

Dan

It's SuperTurboDiesel.com

Happens to be one of the the best places for Benz diesel mayhem that I
have found.

Walt, who's day started out on the "Where's the darn coffee cup, I

Very nice pictures and explanation in the second link, looks like they
sell it for about $200 per side. The welding bit is rather glossed over
- one needs to make sure the temper and hardness of the torsion bar is
not changed during the process.

I got it done from my indy (also Loren's indy), Doug Havlik at Imported
Autos on Reliable Street in Ames, IA. He had the collar milled locally,
or so he said. SO, I don't know about the internet source. I'd bet doug
would sell you one if you asked. He charged me $600 to make the piece,
cut the bar, and install it and align the car, so just the part would be
lots cheaper.

Did find these links, however:

There was a fully restored WW2 B17 in town over the weekend. You
could buy a flight on it for $400 if you wanted, but the tours
were free. It was pretty neat to see. I was amazed at the amount
of oil that those big engines appear to leak. About like an old
617 or something.

We had one here a few years back, I wonder if it was the same one. I remember
they had to send a guy over to Wal Mart to buy oil because the airport didn't
have enough on hand to top off.

Hearing those radial engines wind up was a sound of raw power like I've not
heard anywhere else.

Got to admit I feel the same way. My 02 F150 has been pretty reliable but now
has 138K miles and although there is
much life left, it is tempting to swap to a newer one and not have the issues
that will no doubt come on this one.

I have to say, I'm quickly getting to the point....ok, I'm there, where
totally reliable and boring suits me just fine. :-) For a weekend hobby
car, I don't mind the odd hick-up or failure. But for daily transport, when
I leave the driveway, I expect to return home, without dirty hands. Ya ya,
I know, getting old. lol

Ed
300E, which is kind of a hobby car now, with a good set of tools in the
trunk at all times, just in case.
