Not that I'm an expert or anything, but the turbine section looked OK
to be, it was the middle of the engine that appears to have blown out
-- combustion section or high pressure comriessor. Very unusual.
Modern jet engines are almost unbelievably reliable, and it's not
likely to have been a bird strike 6 min into a flight (but not
impossible -- whistling swans have been know to collide with aircraft
as high as 12,000 ft).
Don't know much about that particular engine, though, it's not an
RB211 -- my brother who worked for GE Aircraft Engines didn't think
much of the RB211. This one is newer, larger, and is certainly a more
complex beast.
Qantas is one of the best airlines flying, so I'm sure they will find
and fix the problem as fast as anyone could.
