Well, I finally got it back on the road.

Having replaced the power steering pump and properly bled and filled the
system, I needed to fix the gasoline leak.

It turns out on the E420 (and maybe other W124s as well), there is a
plastic cover that bolts on the underside of the body underneath the fuel
pumps and filter.

I initially thought the problem was just due to a loose banjo fitting in
the lower fuel pump, but after I cleaned that up, I found that the rubber
hose (with steel fittings on both ends) from the fuel filter to the hard
line on the body was cracked badly and leaking profusely.

I got the replacement hose and some copper sealing rings from Q and did
the work last Saturday. The pictures attached show the progress. I did
not have the correct size of copper sealing rings for the banjo fittings,
so I re-used the old ones. There is a slow weeping of gasoline from the
lower banjo on the lower fuel pump.

During the job, I had unlocked the trunk and all the doors, lifted the
trunk lid, locked the trunk and all the doors from the trunk and then
disconnected the negative lead to the battery, leaving the trunk lid up.
When I was finished with all of the work, I reconnected the negative lead
to the battery, opened the drivers door with the key and then tried to
start the car. After cycling the key innumerable times to fill the new
fuel filter, I tried starting it. No go. I then noticed the headlights
and turn signals were blinking in unison. If I turned the key to off and
then back to on, the blinking lights started again.

After a few minutes, I had an idea! I got out of the car, locked the car
with the key in the driver's door lock, waited a few seconds, and then
unlocked the car with the driver's door lock. When I got back in, the car
started. I presume this is how it's supposed to work. I did notice that
the horn was not sounding when the lights were blinking, which, I
presume, was due to the car's alarm.

I drove the car to church Sunday morning and to work today. It seems to
work OK. It does have a lot more power than our '82 240D/3.0! :-)

I called Q about the correct sealing rings today and they are on the way.

Now I just need to get the code for the radio so I can activate it again.
