In WI the state used to prop up milk prices by purchasing from dairy farmers, and then had the milk made into cheese to distribute to welfare recipients and others who relied on state aid. One summer, one of the state cheese storage facilities in Madison caught fire; picture tons and tons of liquid burning cheese. The fire was tough to put out, and the area absolutely stank for weeks afterward.
