I have a former neighbor who is an Ubuntu geek and an engineer, to boot.

Like most engineers, his practical knowledge and ability to sort things out in
a logical fashion (as opposed to on paper) is marginal at best.

For example, he was trying to reassemble the recoil starter for his weed wacker
one day. I happened to wander over, and saw what he was doing.

"Dang, Dan, I try and try, but I just can't get this spring back into the case!"

(He was feeding the end of the flat wound recoil spring into the housing,
which, by the time he would get near the end, would pop out from the pressure.)

"Try this, Bob."

I wound the spring up around a dowel so it was completely would up and tight
enough so that it was smaller in diameter than the housing, then popped the
whole thing in at once.

"Dang. I've been fighting this thing for a hour."

"That's because you're an engineer, Bob."
