How much "green waste" does your closest metro area generate? One
community of 40,000 people that I researched generates 100 tons/day.
In most places, this is hauled to a landfill. In round numbers,
grinding that and processing it generates 100 gal per ton. that is
10,000 gallons a day of inexpensive fuel. Add to that the amount
generated from the sewage sludge, a free dropoff for wood, plant and
grass clippings, then add all the cellulosic and waste foods, and how
much more can you generate with no cost feedstock? That is a zero
"net energy loss" because you are diverting stuff OUT of landfills.

It sounds good, but why is nobody doing it?
A: it is very expensive per gallon and is not ready for prime time.
This ethanol process is here now and production cost is < $.80/gal
plus admin and capital amortization. Capital recover is ~24 months.
Is there really enough waste cellulose to support the process? Growing
plants to turn them into ethanol turns out to be a net energy loss I
think.
C02 to diesel though, that would be neat. As long as it didn't get out
of control and gobble up all the C02. The trees wouldn't be happy then.
