There is actually a special color for these that used to be available from Wurth. Not sure if you can still find it or not...
I have refinished bundts several times using the Wurth spray paint and MinWax spray spar varnish as a clearcoat. Like any paint work, preparation is key. If you have access to a media blasting cabinet, by all means, do it.
