I looked over the pictures I took of the process and finally figured out what I did back in 2007: I replaced the ignition lock housing, which includes the ignition switch and the mechanism to turn the ignition switch. The housing is shown at http://www.buymbparts.biz/item.wws?sku=W0133-1605516&itempk=14591&mfr=Valeo&weight=1.65 and has the note, "Does not contain lock cylinder (tumbler) : does include ignition switch 202 545 01 04." It costs $195.13. The procedure is to take the housing and ignition switch out, take the switch off the housing, and see what's broken. In my case, the tangs that turn the switch were broken off the mechanism in the housing, so I had to buy the housing.
