Ja,but....

Herr Doktor Booth formulated that response (you said 2004-5) before the 2007 federal spec changed engines forever, and before the market was saturated with the Cx-4 low sulphur oils. Things have changed a LOT since then. About two years ago, you could buy 15W-50 Mobil 1 at wallyland that met the CF spec. Now you can't, and very few oils meet the CF spec. You are right, we DID have this discussion once or twice in the past. In the past 2 to 2 1/2 years mobil 1 has been reformulated about every 6 months.

Your 5W-40 "turbo Diesel Truck" M1 or Delvac 1 is NOT the same oil it was in 2004, 2005 or 2006. It now is Cx-4 oil to meet the spec for 2007 and later engines. It no longer meets the spec for old engines like the 61x.

I am not saying your 61x engine will self destruct in 1000 miles. I CAN say that I don't know what happens when you run Cx-4 oils in a 61x engine. YMMV. I will make the effort to find CF oils for my Diesels. Fortunately, I have a pretty good stock of 15W-50 CF oil laid in 2-3 years ago. When it is gone, I am not sure what I will use.

Ugh, really? Do we have to go through this discussion every quarter?

M1 5w40 "Turbo Diesel Truck" is the same stuff (more or less) as Delvac 1 which Marshall said was just about the best oil you could possibly buy and met the (at the time, 2004-2005ish) highest spec Mercedes had and was totally good for OM6xx engines. I've used M1 5w40 in 4 different cars, well over 150,000 miles and zero oil attributable defects.

Xw40 in just about any formulation is probably fine. I even ran 0w40 in my 240D one winter and it was ducky, started great in the cold. A little more clattery than 5w40 but nothing to really write home about.

5w-40 is not the right oil for OM616/617. I know it is getitng hard
to find the right oil. It is still around. We may have to start
buying dino oil at truckstops, if all the FLAPS won't stock it.
