Subject: Re: [MBZ] Oxygen
Pure oxygen at one atmosphere is indeed a bad thing, especially long
term. Lots of blindness in premie babies from giving them pure
oxygen back in the 50's before it was known to cause trouble.
Pure oxygen can cause "oxygen psychosis" -- not madness per se as
much as distorted thinking. Doesn't happen at low pressures, though,
so pure oxygen for a couple hours at 8k ft. altitude won't cause any
trouble.
At elevated pressures the problem becomes acute, with rapid onset,
which is why deep diving uses a helium/oxygen mixture. Makes voices
weird, but the helium does not dissolve in the bloodstream like
nitrogen does and won't "fizz" when the pressure goes down. It's
used to lower the oxygen concentration.
Ain't science fun?
Peter
