My '81 300TD had a little rubber/plastic plug thing, I think my '83 240D has a metal bung of some sort...

In general be very careful with any threaded fittings on the radiator. This includes oil cooler and transmission cooler connections. You must counter-hold the fitting with a second wrench when trying to open these connections.
