Daughter has an '07 GL320cdi SUV that just turned 100,000 miles.
She drives one or two 60-100 miles trips per week and the rest
short trips.
Car has had no serious problems; the most expensive being
some problem with the "automatic" back lid which was covered
under warrantee. She gets about 20 mpg.

Define cheap?
My standard CL query goes to 3k. I am surprised how many MLs I have seen
in that range, most with transmission problems though. :/ There is a lot
of supply locally.

Diesel is not really a good choice for mostly short-trip driving.
That was the conventional wisdom, but I remember a while back that several
posters said it wasn't really possible to carbon up a modern engine. That
made me wonder if she would be neutral in a diesel, plus (since it is also
the trip car) we'd get the advantages on maintenance and long trips.
There were several diesel Rs in the Raleigh-Charlotte corridor, mainly I'm
curious if they had the weak transmissions of the MLs or if there are
known
problems with the engine.
Thanks,
Tim
