Thats a big generalization to make. We're really talking about 4 or 5 distinct 
engines here.

IIRC there was a 1.5l NA that was pretty awful, a 1.6 NA that was somewhat 
better. 50hp wouldn't be so bad if the car was light, most 240Ds only had 62hp.
Then there was a turbo, I thought the Quantum turbo Wonko had was fairly 
spritely if not a speed demon.
The eco-diesel (late '80s?) was supposed to be quicker still.

Weak in terms of power, about 50HP I think for the 1.6l NA, and prone to
head gasket issues, particularly if driven hard and overheated (aluminum
head).
