Thats a big generalization to make. We're really talking about 4 or 5 distinct engines here.
IIRC there was a 1.5l NA that was pretty awful, a 1.6 NA that was somewhat better. 50hp wouldn't be so bad if the car was light, most 240Ds only had 62hp. Then there was a turbo, I thought the Quantum turbo Wonko had was fairly spritely if not a speed demon. The eco-diesel (late '80s?) was supposed to be quicker still. -Curt Date: Sat, 03 Dec 2011 19:05:32 -0500 From: Allan Streib <str...@cs.indiana.edu> To: Mercedes Discussion List <mercedes@okiebenz.com> Subject: Re: [MBZ] TDI, was:Secret Message for Rusty Message-ID: <m1borpqjzn....@cs.indiana.edu> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Alex Chamberlain <apchamberl...@gmail.com> writes: > On Fri, Dec 2, 2011 at 8:19 PM, Allan Streib <str...@cs.indiana.edu> wrote: >> The TDI is reportedly a decent engine but VW diesels don't do well being >> flogged. ?The italian tunup is not something you want to do. ?Drive them >> gently and they will do OK. ?I'm talking mostly about the older NA >> diesels; don't know to what extent this applies to the TDI. > > I have no idea why this would be true of the older VW diesels (just > generally a weak engine?) Weak in terms of power, about 50HP I think for the 1.6l NA, and prone to head gasket issues, particularly if driven hard and overheated (aluminum head).
