I agree with the glow plugs too! Last month I had the same issue with my 1983 300D. My plugs were less than 3 years old and I started to experience hard starts. I tested the glow plugs with a meter and 3 were bad. Changed the five with new Bosch glow plugs and it starts right up.

Many short runs will kill plugs faster than few long runs. Living in a colder climate (and driving during the winter) is obviously harder on plugs. -Curt Date: Wed, 21 Dec 2011 20:18:52 -0500 From: Dan Penoff <lwb...@yahoo.com> To: Mercedes List <mercedes@okiebenz.com> Subject: [MBZ] Steve and Glow Plugs Message-ID: <52f2e481-2d7d-4192-865c-5debd7218...@yahoo.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Steve has been trying to post about a glow plug problem he's experiencing but the SP*M filter keeps killing his messages, so I am paraphrasing for him: He is experiencing a similar glow plug issue, where the key is turned and light comes on for 4 seconds and goes out. Repeated attempts get the same results, and poor starting (indicating the glow plugs are most likely only on for that period of time.) This started suddenly, not gradually. All five plugs were replaced two years ago. 30A fuse has been inspected and is OK (also replaced two years ago) Brand new battery He states that his ignition switch has been a bit funky of late, where it sometimes requires that the key be jiggled to get the glow plug light on. However, maintaining pressure on the key still results in the four second glow. The engine will start after being warmed with a heater, so it does run. He is looking for a quick fix/diagnosis, as he doesn't have his multimeter handy...
