The latest ones, hot film or hot wire, are susceptible to contamination and plenty have been replaced under warranty. Oil coming off those aftermarket oiled air filters is one cause.
The MAF in my 27 year old Porsche which is an aluminum flapper in the intake air stream has never failed but the slide contacts will eventually wear out. It's a first generation Motronic.
