Long ago when you first complained, I said it was likely leaking through the low pressure hose. Yes Through the hose.
Second choice, leaking through the pump into the engine.
Unless your CA 85 is freakishly different, all the SLS plumbing is on the left side of the car, not the turbo side. (applies to earlier and later TDs)

Oil around turbo: Well, you didn't want to replace the evil trap oxidizer (Football) as everyone, including MB suggested, so I would suspect the turbo is trashed. Pity, because MB might have given you a nice new bypass pipe to replace the evil football, but also a nice shiny new turbocharger.

All:

I can't recall whether I tasked the group to help me figure out why
the newly re-reconected self levelling system on my 1985 300TD with
the CA version engine kept losing (or loosing, if you prefer) its SLS
fluid. The rear components were dry (SLS valve, air cells, struts) so
I had suspected a leaky canister that was pretty much covered with a
film of oily residue, or perhaps a hose connector under the hood. I
cleaned the canister and surrounding area thoroughly and I drove the
car for a couple months.

This past Saturday, the local MBCA club hosted a session at a
dealership in suburban MD in which a tech would drive our cars onto a
lift and proceed to spend up to an hour going ovet the car with a fine
tooth comb to find new problems and diagnose existing ones. We
checekd the SLS canister and sure enough it was bone dry, but to my
surprise there was no evidence of fluid anywhere under hte hood.
After 30 minutes, "Ed" and I discovered the surprising source of the
fluid leak, and probably solved another issue as well (sooty smell
inside the car when the heat came on).

I will award a special prize of artisanal (formerly known as "home
made") hot pepper jelly to the first among you who correctly diagnoses
the source of the SLS fluid leak. Hint: it was not the canister,
struts, or air cells).

Rules: One guess per entry! NO CONTACTING "ED"!
