This ad caught my eye in the local trader: "1983 Mercedes 300 Turbo Diesel, tan color, bought new, garage kept, never wrecked, excellent gas mileage, driven on weekends, ex. condition. $4000 OBO. 803-786-4616."
This car is not in Seattle. This car is in South Carolina. No interest or affiliation, but if someone is interested I would go look at it. I'm confused...is it summer 2006 or 2007 that you would be free? Things to do along the way: There would be no shortage of those, the problem would be time. For me, I want to have driven to the Arctic Ocean (ok, within 3 miles of it and taken a tour bus the rest of the way). I would want to subordinate everything to reaching the goal...and since there will inevtably be problems along the way, it might be best to plan the vast majority of the extra stuff for the way back, so as not to endanger the goal of reaching the Arctic Ocean. Personally, I like historical things...hiking would be neat...taking in local scenery, etc. I really don't care...I'll pass on Worlds of Fun/Disneylandish stuff. But I think we should be sure that the side attractions add to the enjoyment of the experience of the ultimate goal: Arctic Ocean and back. If we climb rocks, I'll watch...although sitting atop a tor sounds like fun. My two cents. This coming summer I've got a co-op job in Huntsville, and I graduate the semester after that (in December '06). So summer of '06 is where I could be doing anything. > I definitely have a limit...let's see. 3 weeks of vacation per > year...would need to keep at least one for other things, so 10 work > days, which if I leave on a Friday after work and return on a Sunday > (and sleep at my desk the folowing monday!!! :-) that would give me > 16.5 days. Is it even possible to do the trip from Seattle to Alaska and back in two weeks? Looked it up, and its 2,300 miles from Seattle to Fairbanks... so it is physically possible, but I also have to factor in that its 2,600 miles from my house to Seattle (!!). The site I looked at suggested a ferry from Alaska back to Seattle... if we have a two week trip limit that seems to be a pretty promising idea. If somebody's car got left behind though would mean they would have to go up again to get it though... > I'm thinking that we OFFICIALLY schedule the trip from the main > rendezvous point - XYZ, Canada - wherever...we will then all decide > collectively, how much time we want to spend from that point until we > get BACK to that point. Sounds good, I like the OkieQ idea Kaleb threw out for the east coast meeting point. Helps that I almost drive by his house on the way out though ;) > I would say we make as much progress as possible on big paved > highways, leaving extra time for problems on the Dalton and little > Alaskan excursions...like sitting on the tops of tors. What all activities is everyone up for along the way? I think a lot of light hiking would be great. I've done rock climbing in a gym, and think the Yukon couldn't be a better place to climb a real rock. Wouldn't do it without some kind of organization or person who really knew what they were doing though. Once in Alaska I imagine there is quite a bit of sightseeing to do as well! What do you guys have in mind?
