Not many people run full legal power from a mobile radio. VHF radios in the 40-60 watt range are quite compact and, with a decent antenna, will give you five miles or so of range to another car, or considerably more to a well-situated repeater. At those frequencies increasing the transmitter power only helps you so much, because the earth's curvature eventually gets in the way.
