Rich running is often a failed manifold pressure sensor or (the cheap fix) a leaking hose from the manifold to the sensor. Causes VERY rich running, as in black smoke when you step on the gas, but that will indeed dilute the oil.

Milage will only drop from about 12 to about 8....

If it's possibly to rich, there is an adjustment knob on the side of the control unit. Assuming (yeah, I know, shut up) it's the same as my '73 450 SE, it is located behind the right side kickpanel under the glove box. You can
turn the rheostat back and forth and hear the idle quality change.

I adjusted mine by ear which later turned out to be spot on. With the
engine at a hot idle, turn the knob a click at a time until it starts to slow and get lumpy by listening to the exhaust. Then turn it the other way until the
smoothest idle is achieved, on the lean side.

Doing this with an exhaust gas analyzer is the best way but the by-ear
method is adequate.
