Check carefully, those lower control arms are known to rust out.
Much worse on the W126, but given the age, something to look for.

So the noise I have been ignoring for the last week thinking it was a
broken exhaust hanger - turns out to be a busted out lower right shock
mount in the rear. I have heard of discussion revolving around
this, but
