I have an IBM Selectric that I picked up for free a few years ago and
has sat unused since then. I actually wanted to use it the other day to
neatly address some envelopes, and didn't want to fool with trying to
feed them through the printer because half the time they don't go
through properly, and it's just a lot more work to set up an envelope in
a word processor than it is to just type the damn thing.

Anyway, I turned it on and it just sort of chattered and didn't really
respond to the keyboard. I've read that they can do this after sitting
for a while, but this one didn't seem to settle down.

Is there a common adjustment or repair or cleaning that can resolve
this?

In the meantime I used my dad's old manual 1960's era Smith-Corona,
after locating it in the basement and finding it still works perfectly.
