That latency just screams satellite. High bandwidth-delay product (High speed high latency) connections can be very inefficient of they aren't 100% error free.
There's an old saw about it being tough to beat the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes... I'd guess your current MTU would be in the multi-exabyte range... But then the latency is a killer. And one bum tape in the middle of the batch and (according to the TCP specs, without selective retransmission), you'd have to dump the whole load, send a station wagon back the other way and then wait for a new station wagon of tapes to be sent...
