What should the timing be for the glow plug timer? When I turn the key, the light stays on for about 5 seconds and then goes out. I've checked the voltage across each glow plug and get 12vdc but only for that short time span. Is there an adjustment on the timing relay to extend the time? NOTE: this only applies to cars up through 1980 which have external temperature sensors. Starting in 81, the sensor was built into the glow plug relay and measured ambient temperature. If you diagnosis is correct and your glow plugs are turning off after 5 seconds, you may have a bad relay. There are no adjustments. There is a temperature sensor on the driver's side of the head (one of two) that you could disconnect and then try your timing test again. (The other sensor is for your engine temperature display, so no harm if both are disconnected for this test) If the sensor has shorted, the timing will be the shortest possible interval allowed by the components, if it is open (like disconnected) the interval will be the longest. NOTE: I ran mine for years with the sensor disconnected. Try it, what can you loose? Regards, Jim Friesen Phoenix AZ 79 300SD, 261 K miles 98 ML 320, 138 K miles
