Check the positive cable on the starter -- typically, Benz attaches the main buss line there, and it can slip up into the cable bundle while you are wrestling the starter in, with the result that the alternator is NOT connected to the electrical system. You can get some contact by the loop on the end of the cable touching the bolt, but it can easily slip away, too.

Regulator failure is also a posibility -- easy enough to check, just undo the two screws and take it out of the rear bottom of the alternator. If it comes right out instead of springing downward against the brush springs, the brushes are worn out. You can replace them or get a replacement regulator.
