I can assure you, the magnetic screw driver will not grab the copper O ring - if it's really copper. ;<)

Don't use a magnetic screw driver to grab the copper o ring and you will be fine. If you do the magnet could also grab the barrel and pull it out as well

Nothing to worry about, just be clean and don't try to "fix" anything beyond the o-ring and the copper seal.

So he got the barrel out and put it back in wrong. Very simple there
are little pins that stick into the bore to hold them in the correct
orientation. If you put the barrel back in wrong with the slot not
lined up with the pin it will push the pin in. You then have to open
the side cover and push the pin back in. Don't need a intake gasket
because you do not need to pull the intake.

So it seems like consensus is to do this myself. I'm glad to hear so
many others have gone before me.
I'll also need seals for the intake manifold yes?

I need to put in a new valve cover gasket too, it seems like a good
time for that too.

IIRC the problem my Indy had was that something got flipped upside
down or rotated or something when he took the DV seals out and the
engine would either run on 3 cylinders or try to run away. He fought
with it away and finally had to bring in a specialist. It didn't *look*
like I'd gotten a new IP but its not like I marked the old one either.

I don't know of anybody else in my area that will even attempt an old
diesel so I'm kind of stuck with this guy. We're about to have an
argument over his vendor of center carrier bearings too. Apparently I'm
perfectly attuned to hearing the bearing go loooong before it gets real
loud and he can hear it. He did the one in my car about a year ago and
its making noise again...
