Paint will sometimes release in smoking sheets too. We installed a cheap
Vogelzang stove in the camp and the first time it got real hot a big sheet of
paint fell off the bottom...
It took a few good hot fires for all the paint to burn off, we should have done
it outside.

Paint will burn off and smoke also..
Stove black has been used for decades to "shine up stoves". It just has to
have a seasoning fire to finish the process.. Likely you built a large fire
and burned it off instead of "setting it".
