The temperature dial is a thermostat... you set it to the desired
temperature and the system will do what is necessary to make it happen. If
the system is working well, you should be able to leave it in the middle
and almost never touch it. The heating or cooling will always be
appropriate based on outside and inside temperature.

The AC is used to dehumidify the air, which is useful for defrosting. So,
its correct for the compressor to run when the defrost button is pushed.
For the "normal" running mode, the center button, the AC compressor also
runs for any temps a bit above freezing. This increases the comfort in the
cabin of the car by providing dry air, even if its warm.

You can override the use of the AC for normal running by pressing the EC
button. The bi-level button second from the left it to be used for
increased clearing of the windows, but should only be used for a short
time, according to the manual. The AC is used for this mode also.

Also note, the manual recommends to never turn the system off, unless it is
done so temporarily to avoid unpleasant odors from entering the cabin.
Fresh air is critical to keeping the driver alert!

When working right, these systems really work great. I've seen prices for
the repair pairs come down recently, so its worth while to get it sorted
out. The common problems are usually pretty simple.
