I had an 87 420 with the smoke silver / burgundy - nice looking car.

I would not order the burgundy myself, but it definitely grew on me as well. I also think the burgundy, for what ever reason, holds up better then other colors (maybe sunlight is absorbed better....just a guess).

For comparison, I had an 87 300SDL in the smoke silver as well, but with brown interior. The carpets looked more green then brown, and the leather had quite a few cracks. It may be related to the prior owners care, but the 420's interior was mint with 160K on it (the 300sdl had 150 or so).

The show car for the 86 SDL brochure was smoke silver with burgundy
interior. My 86 SDL is identical to the one in the brochure. It is a nice
color combo. The 87 TD in question has the burgundy interior, not
red. Most of the 87 TDs seem to be white with blue interior. Many
dealerships used them for roadside assistance cars, and those were
white. Any white 87 TD has a high probability of starting life as a
roadside assistance car.

My 62 190Dc had a RED interior. see
http://www.heckflosse.nl/incol4.htm code 122. It was very popular. Most
110s sold in the US between 62 and 65 were cream with the RED interior. It was very bright. I didn't like it at first but it really grows on you. My
62 had the red bench seat. I could haul 6 in it!

Was the red interior was popular many years ago? Just
curious.
