Anyone have any good advice in regard to range hoods?
We have a Broan unit. Maybe 5 to 10 years old.
I cannot recall the model but it is the curved one rather than the old
boxy one and it has 2 small halogen flood light type bulbs and a panel
on the face with push buttons for 3 levels of fan speed and 3 levels of
light.
Unfortunately, it would appear that the electronic board has suffered a
failure. There was a flash like someone was taking a photo and now the
lights will not work.
The fan still works fine on all 3 speeds.
We had an issue once before about 2 years ago when a bulb burned out and
I was putting a new one it. It went dead but that time it was a fuse
which was readily replaced once we took off enough part to get to the
board itself. I assumed I had done something while putting in the new
bulb but maybe not.
The gist of all this is that the replacement board is going to cost
about $200 and the whole hood only cost something like $300.
So, I have some choices.
I can replace the whole thing but that is a bit of a pain because it is
ducted outside and I will have to get the thing out and the new one in.
If so, I may swap to a Bosch. A bit more expensive but it looks to be
simpler.
I can replace the board and hope they have improved it. The new one has
a different # so I assume this may not be an isolated incident. Warranty
of course is long over.
3rd choice - and this one appeals to me as a frugal sort - is to find a
way to make the lights work without their board. Should basically be
doable as the board just facilitates the 3 light levels. I could readily
hook them up full power as I doubt we use the dimmed functions much
anyway - or I could put in a dimmer switch that would provide variable
light. The bigger issue with that is where to mount the dimmer etc.
SWMBO is not impressed with my frugal idea and is concerned that I may
make some Rube Goldberg contraption I guess.
So, I solicit your thoughts on the matter.

who happy
