"Boatloads of traffic" is what I've read you need to really make any substantial money with AdSense.
One thing that might pay a little better is to get yourself signed up as an Amazon.com "associate." In this program, you place on your site links to products on Amazon.com. If people buy using those links, you get a commission. If you can do a good job identifying products that your site visitors might buy, you can earn decent money (or so I've heard). This is of course more work than just putting AdSense ads on your site.
