I've worked with SA before but to no real depth. Why not just turn it
off and remove people who send spam? I mean honestly I'd much rather
deal with some spam than have every one of my emails rejected for content.

It is the spam filter that is rejecting the emails, not the mailing list
software. I have been looking for a solution on the web, and there may be no
easy one.
Perhaps the spam filter can be tweaked. I don't know what spam filter program
the mailman mail list software uses. I have found documentation for ASSP and
SpamAssasin. Neither looks particularly fun to deal with. Maybe another geeky
lister can assist?
