Well, certainly faster than the terrestrial velocities to which we are
accustomed, but only as fast as it needs to be going to not fall out of
the sky.

Looking at it another way, it is constantly falling, but with its
horizontal velocity, the amount the earth falls away happens to match how
much it is falling, so it doesn't get any closer to the earth.
