Going to see one for sale. Anything specific on this car that I should look out
for? Owner says car stalls once up to temp and can't be restarted for hours.
What can this mean?
90% chance of bad fuel pump relay. When you first start it, turn the key to run
(not all the way to start) and listen for the pump. If you don't hear that for a
few seconds after the engine dies, it died because the relay is flaky.
2.3 relays will cut off the fuel before the engine hits redline, maybe not the
worst thing in a car that old.
2.3-16 relays are rare used and expensive new.
2.6 or 3.0 relays from six cylinder W201 and W124 are common and cheap on the
used market, I think I paid $35 for mine, but putting a six cylinder relay in a
four cylinder car means the fuel pump will not cut out if some idiot overrevs
the engine. A piece of wire stuck in the proper terminals of the relay socket
will get you home after you buy it.
What other problems are specific to a cosworth?
In addition to the usual W201 stuff like bad outside temp readouts and
nonfunctional window lift switches:
Either it will have collapsed SLS accumulators (along with a control valve
that's been hammered until it won't hold pressure), or some fool will have
'upgraded' it to regular shock absorbers. If you can have a couple of guys sit
in the trunk and the car will raise up when you start the engine, it's a miracle
or the owner actually maintains it.
Valve lash is, IIRC, mechanically adjusted with shims and probably hasn't been
touched in 20 years.
The Getrag 5sp doesn't seem to last as long between rebuilds as the regular 190E
5sp, but that might just be that the 16v get driven harder. The Getrag is rated
stronger.
If it's got 100,000 miles on it, the limited slip differential clutches are long
gone, but that applies to any car with limited slip. Nobody ever maintains them
other than occasional fluid changes.
Just think of it as a 190E 2.3 with SLS, power leather seats and a $10,000
cylinder head upgrade.
The LCD display in the rally computer will be more useless than the LCD in the
outside temperature readout.
Mitch.
